What's it like to be homeless? Venturers from Crew 116 and 430 and
Ship 26 wanted to find out.
They spent the night in cardboard box "homes" they built, had to
work for basic amenities like pillows and sleeping bags, and spent
lots of time by the "Shantytown" fire. At 5 AM on a Sunday
morning they got up and cooked 130 ham, egg and cheese biscuits,
delivered them to the West Side of Manhattan and set up on a corner on
the West Side, where they fed about 74 homeless people, along with
coffee, hot chocolate, soup, water and over 30 bags of donated
clothing and toiletries sorted out to size and type. The
"Breakfast Run" site was supplied by the Midnight Run organization (
www.midnightrun.org ).
Thanks to St. Mark's Church in Rockville Centre for use of the
upstairs room for our "Shelter" and their parking lot for Shantytown,
and Venture leaders:
Bob Becker, Elise Becker, Donna Martin, Tony Santino, Yole Santino
and Donna Zapart of Crew 116
Joe and Betsy Mandara from Ship 26
Greg and Chris Hegmann from crew 430
And thanks to the Venturers from Crew 116, Crew 430 and Ship 26 for
taking Homeless Awareness Seriously.
